چکیده مقاله:

Background: Epilepsy is considered as one of the most important disorders in neurology. Temporal lobe epilepsy is a form of epilepsy including two main types of mesial and lateral (neocortex). Objectives: Determination and comparison of electroencephalogram (EEG) pattern in the ictal and interictal phases of mesial and lateral temporal lobe epilepsy. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study included 80 patients with mesial and lateral temporal lobe epilepsy who satisfied the inclusion criteria. The patients were monitored using EEG, and then the EEG results were compared between two groups of temporal epilepsies. Results: There was no significant difference between two groups of patients (mesial and lateral temporal lobe epilepsy) in terms of the type of seizure, history of tumor or trauma or hypoxia, and duration of seizure history (p>0.05). The ictal wave onset in 52.5% of the patients was in the left temporal region, and the ictal wave onset in 58.75% of patients was the slow wave. There was no significant difference between the two groups of patients in terms of ictal wave onset and its location. Conclusions: According to the results, EEG is a good method for detecting temporal lobe epilepsy, but it does not help to differentiate the type of mesial and lateral temporal epilepsy. In order to distinguish between these two types, EEG alone is not helpful, and other diagnostic methods are required.

Electroencephalography in Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy: A Review

Electroencephalography (EEG) has an important role in the diagnosis and classification of epilepsy. It can provide information for predicting the response to antiseizure drugs and to identify the surgically remediable epilepsies. In temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) seizures could originate in the medial or lateral neocortical temporal region, and many of these patients are refractory to medical tre...

Ictal chronology and interictal spikes predict perfusion patterns in temporal lobe epilepsy: a multivariate study

Typical (TPP) and atypical (APP) perfusion patterns (PP) may be seen in ictal SPECT of patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). APP may pose problem in the lateralization of the epileptogenic zone (EZ). We aimed to investigate predictive variables for the occurrence of TPP and APP. Fifty-one TLE patients were submitted to successful anterior-mesial temporal lobectomy. Univariate (UVA) and mu...

Reelin Signalling Pathway and Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy: A Causative Link?

Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) is the most frequent form of partial epilepsy. Granule cell dispersion, resulting from aberrant neuronal migration in the hippocampus, is pathognomonic of MTLE. Reelin, a secreted neurodevelopmental glycoprotein has a crucial role in controlling the radial migration of neurons. Several animal studies have implicated Reelin in the MTLE pathogenesis. The aim o...

Allopregnanolone decreases interictal spiking and fast ripples in an animal model of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

The objective of this study was to characterize the impact of allopregnanolone, a neurosteroid that acts as a positive allosteric modulator of synaptic and extrasynaptic GABAA receptors, on interictal spikes and high-frequency oscillations (ripples: 80-200 Hz, fast ripples: 250-500 Hz) in the pilocarpine model of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. Seven out of 25 Sprague-Dawley rats experiencing 1 ...

Ictal and interictal respiratory changes in temporal lobe and absence epilepsy in childhood.

BACKGROUND Autonomic dysfunctions occur during but also in between seizures. During seizures, the direct involvement of central autonomic control centers cause specific changes in heart rate and respiration. The pathophysiology of autonomic dysfunctions that are observed in the interictal period is more difficult to explain. These alterations are most likely due to changes in the epileptic netw...
